Grasshopper Alternatives When You Outgrow It

Grasshopper alternatives compared: Callata, Quo, Talkroute, Google Voice, Line2 and RingCentral. Prices, texting, call recording and who each fits.

Short answer: If Grasshopper has started to feel limited, the main alternatives are Callata (a full team phone system at $99 per month including five users, then $20 per extra user), Quo (a modern calling and texting app from $19 per user), Talkroute (per-plan pricing with recording on Pro), Google Voice (cheapest for Workspace users), Line2 (a single private line) and RingCentral (full-featured, per user). The right one depends on whether you need more features, more people, or just a lower price.

Prices come from each vendor's pricing page, checked October 1, 2026, and exclude taxes and fees.

Where Grasshopper shines, and where it stops

Grasshopper is a virtual phone system: callers dial your business number, hear a professional greeting and menu, and get forwarded to your cell or another phone. Its pricing is per plan rather than per user: True Solo is $14 per month, Solo Plus $25 and Small Business $55, all billed annually. Solo Plus and Small Business allow unlimited users sharing extensions. Texting is included after a $19.50 one-time registration and $1.50 per month, extra numbers are $9 per month, and extra Solo Plus extensions are $3.

The plan is simple, and that is the point. Businesses usually outgrow it when they want:

  • Recorded calls and AI summaries of what was said.
  • A softphone the whole team can answer from a browser, not only call forwarding.
  • Several numbers without paying $9 per month for each.
  • AI to answer after hours instead of voicemail.

1. Callata

Callata is a step up from a virtual number to a team phone system, at $99 per month including five users, plus $20 per month for each additional user (the first month is $79.99). It includes up to three local numbers, unlimited inbound calling and a pooled allowance of 1,500 outbound US and Canada minutes per user per month (then $0.01 per minute), ring groups, extensions, business-hours routing, a shared texting inbox (after a one-time $49 10DLC registration), call recording with AI summaries, voicemail transcription with urgency triage and E911. Optional AI agents answer calls after hours or when nobody picks up, at $0.25 per minute.

Compared with Grasshopper: costs $44 more per month than Grasshopper Small Business on annual billing for up to five users, and Grasshopper's unlimited users mean the gap widens as you grow past five, but Callata adds recording with AI summaries, a browser softphone for everyone, and AI answering. Callata does not offer toll-free numbers. See Callata vs Grasshopper.

2. Quo (formerly OpenPhone)

Quo gives each user a number and a polished app for calls and texts: Starter $19 per user monthly ($15 annually), Business $33 ($23) and Scale $47 ($35). Business adds AI call summaries for all calls, phone menus, CRM integrations and automatic recording.

Compared with Grasshopper: a much more modern experience and strong texting, but per-user pricing. Two users on Business cost $66 per month on monthly billing. See Quo pricing explained.

3. Talkroute

Talkroute keeps per-plan pricing like Grasshopper: Basic $19 (1 user), Plus $39 (3 users) and Pro $59 (10 users) per month on monthly billing. Pro includes unlimited phone menus, call recording, reporting and up to three numbers, with 5,000 texts per month.

Compared with Grasshopper: the closest like-for-like upgrade, adding recording and reporting on Pro. Extra users beyond the plan cost $5 each. See Talkroute pricing explained.

4. Google Voice

Google Voice for teams costs $10 per user per month (Starter, up to 10 users), $20 (Standard) or $30 (Premier), plus a Google Workspace subscription from $7 per user. Standard adds auto attendants and Gemini call notes.

Compared with Grasshopper: often cheaper for a company already paying for Workspace, and it rings every device. Admin and routing are simpler than a dedicated phone system. See Google Voice pricing explained.

5. Line2

Line2 Starter is $15.99 per month ($13.75 annually) for a local or toll-free number with unlimited US and Canada calls and texts. Business ($25.99) adds call recording and voicemail transcriptions.

Compared with Grasshopper True Solo: similar price, adds call screening and a toll-free option on the same plan. It is a one-person tool. See Line2 pricing explained.

6. RingCentral

RingCentral RingEX Core is $30 per user monthly or $20 annually and includes calling, texting (25 per user per month), video and voicemail transcription.

Compared with Grasshopper: a full office phone platform with desk phones and integrations. It costs much more per person, so it suits businesses that need its depth. See RingCentral pricing explained.

Cost for a three-person team

Provider Monthly cost, 3 people
Grasshopper Solo Plus (annual billing) $25
Grasshopper Small Business (annual billing) $55
Talkroute Plus $39
Google Voice Starter + Workspace Business Starter $51 ($30 + $21)
Quo Starter (monthly) $57
RingCentral Core (monthly) $90
Callata $99

Grasshopper is still the cheapest way for three people to share one business number, and at three users Callata is the most expensive option in this table. The question is whether recording, AI summaries, a shared texting inbox and AI answering are worth the difference.

What you may give up by leaving

Grasshopper's per-plan pricing, unlimited users on Solo Plus and Small Business, toll-free number options and 24/7 support are real advantages. Moving to a per-user provider can raise your bill as you add people, and moving to a local-only provider means giving up a toll-free number. Weigh those against the features you are missing today.
