CallataGuides

About these guides and how they are built

Callata Guides are published by Callata (callatta.com), a business phone system from Dunn Investing LLC. This page explains where every number comes from.

Data sources

Every statistic on a data page comes from one of these public files. Nothing is estimated or backfilled; when a source suppresses or omits a value, the page drops the sentence that would have used it.

Area codes

Area code pages cover the 372 geographic area codes NANPA lists as in service in the 50 states and DC. Overlay, time zone, dialing plan and in-service date come from the NPA report. Assigned codes, carriers, rate centers, pooling and assignment dates are counted from the utilized central office code file (codes with status "assigned").

"Share of 800" uses the 800 three-digit codes that begin with 2 through 9; a few of those are reserved (for example N11 service codes and 555), so the practical ceiling is slightly lower.

Local numbers by city

NANPA assigns codes to rate centers, identified by abbreviations such as "HACKENSACK" or "LSAN DA 01". A rate center is matched to a Census place or minor civil division in the same state when its abbreviation matches the place name exactly, after removing zone suffixes for large cities, or as an unambiguous abbreviation of it. Rate centers that cannot be matched keep their abbreviation and are not given a city page. Several rate centers can resolve to one city (large cities are split into zones), and a rate center's calling area is usually larger than the place it is named after; the population shown is the place's own Census estimate.

A city page is published only when the place has at least 2 assigned exchanges and a 2024 population of at least 500, and then in order of population until the page budget is reached.

Industries

141 small-business industries are mapped to six-digit NAICS 2017 codes, the classification County Business Patterns 2023 uses. The descriptions of why the phone matters and typical calls were written by Callata as general guidance; the counts beside them come from CBP.

State pages need at least 20 establishments and metro pages at least 10; within those floors, pages are selected by establishment count. County Business Patterns marks employment and payroll with a noise flag; values with high noise appear in tables, marked, but are never used in the text. Size-class shares are of establishments with mid-March employees.

Page selection

The site is built to a fixed page budget. Hubs, every state, metro area, area code, industry and editorial article are always included; industry-by-state pages, industry-by-metro pages and city pages are then added by priority (establishments or population).

Prices

Callata's own prices and features come from its product pages: $99 a month with 5 users included and $20 per additional user (first month $79.99), up to 3 local numbers, unlimited inbound calling with 1,500 pooled outbound US and Canada minutes per user then $0.01 a minute, a one-time $49 carrier registration for texting and AI minutes at $0.25 per minute. Competitor prices are list prices recorded on the date given and can change; check the vendor before you buy.

Corrections

If a figure looks wrong, email [email protected] with the page address. We fix errors by correcting the source mapping, not by editing individual pages.
