Area code 624

About area code 624

624 is one of 23 geographic area codes serving New York; NANPA records its in-service date as November 16, 2023. It is an overlay: 624 and 716 cover the same territory, so neighbors on the same street can have different area codes. It is in the Eastern time zone.

Ten-digit and seven-digit dialing in 624

According to NANPA's dialing-plan data, local calls within 624 are dialed as ten digits (area code plus number) and toll calls as ten digits (area code plus number). Ten-digit local dialing means the area code is part of how customers save and recognize your number, so print it in full everywhere. NANPA's dialing-plan note for this code reads: "1+10 digit dialing permissible at service provider discretion."

A new code in an overlay

NANPA's utilized-code file dated 10/01/2026 lists no central office codes assigned in 624 yet. NANPA assigned the code on October 13, 2022 and put it in service on November 16, 2023. In an overlay, numbers for the shared territory keep coming from the older code (716) until carriers start drawing codes from 624, so a business phone number requested here today will most likely carry 716.

716 has been in service since January 1, 1947 and has 767 assigned codes held by 57 carriers across 79 rate centers. Its largest code holders are Verizon New York, INC. (192), Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless - NY (95), and New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC - DC (78). Its most populous matched places are Buffalo (277,000), Tonawanda (71,411), Hamburg (60,612), and Niagara Falls (47,512).

An overlay leaves existing numbers unchanged and adds a second code for new numbers in the same territory. Local calls there need all ten digits, so businesses should print their full number everywhere.
